Ron McAndrew to Speak at The Milk Room at Applehurst Farm

Ron McAndrew is a tough-on-crime former prison warden from Florida who presided over several executions.  He used to support the death penalty, but now has changed his mind.  Here his story at the Milk Room at Applehurst Farm in Epping, NH.  The Milk Room serves ice cream, homemade donuts, has a produce stand and a "junk room" with locally made furniture and antiques.  This community gathering place with host Mr. McAndrew on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 6 p.m.  Please stop by and hear his story. 

Volunteers Needed for 2010 Latino Festival of New Hampshire
The NHCADP will be tabling at this year's Latino Festival of New Hampshire, and needs volunteers! The festival is on Saturday, August 21 from noon to 8 PM. It will be held in Veterans Park, on Elm Street in Manchester, NH.  If you are interested in helping out, please contact Barbara Keshen at bkeshen@nodeathpenaltynh.org.
The Latino Festival of NH is run by Latinos Unidos of New Hampshire, a non-profit Latino cultural organization. In addition to putting on the Latino Festival, the group provides scholarships to Latino New Hampshire residents. Judge Nadeau Speaks Out Against the Death Penalty

Judge Nadeau, a former NH Supreme Court Justice, recently spoke out against the death penalty at the June Study Commission hearing. He also wrote an Opinion on this subject for Foster's Daily Democrat. That article can be viewed HERE.

NHCADP Holds Its First Annual Meeting

The NHCADP held its first annual meeting on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Verdant Pastures Theater, Epping, NH.

The gathering included two live speakers and a special telecast message from Sr. Helen Prejean.

The live speakers were Ray Krone and Bob Curley. Ray Krone was wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to death based on faulty forensic evidence.  Learn more about the travesty of Ray's case HERE.

Bob Curley’s young son was abducted and killed by two men from Manchester in 1997.  Bob’s book, The Ride, about his journey after his son's death was available for signing and purchase. More information on this book can be found HERE.

Coalition president Barbara Keshen provided an update on the work thus far of the NH Legislative Study Commission on the Death Penalty, which is currently studying this issue in NH (see the “Study Commission” section of our website for details).

NHCADP Now Has Staff!                                          

NHCADP received a grant from the Tides Foundation to hire a part-time staff member to work on community outreach, membership and legislative support.  Katherine Cooper is the new Coalition employee.  Katherine is a former public defender, assistant attorney general and executive director of the New Hampshire Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.  Katherine can be reached at 603-674-4885 or kcooper@nodeathpenaltynh.org.


LEGISLATIVE ACTION

HB 520 - This 2009 bill established a commission to study the death penalty in New Hampshire.  The Study Commission meets the first Friday of each month at the Legislative Office Building in Concord.  For more information, contact Katherine Cooper, kcooper@nodeathpenaltynh.org

SB 474 - This 2010 bill seeks to expand the death penalty.  This bill did not pass the Senate because legislators wanted to hear the report from the study commission before making a decision on the bill's merits.
